Shirazz Jazz Gypsies

Shirazz Jazz Gypsies are based in the south-west of WA. The group play music of Django Reinhardt and Stefan Grappelli, as well as other jazz giants such as Stochelo Rosenburg and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Phil Strahan on guitar is a well-known guitarist and recording artist, and fellow guitarist and bass player Manfred Bruggler has been performing here for many years, with both being great vocalists. Kate Telchadder plays the violin and enjoys playing many different styles and genres having started violin as a classical student.

As well as the Shirazz Gypsies, these players enjoy performing in many other music ensembles in a blend of genres. Kate has played with classical groups such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and now plays with local indie rockers Freeway South as well the South West Baroque Ensemble, Manfred with Groove-o-matics and Phil with Bunbury and Perth Jazz artists.

All performers are keen teachers inspiring the next generation to give music a go and keep practicing. Kate is Director of Music at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School in Busselton, and Phil has a reputable music studio at his home as well as teaching at local schools. Manfred enjoys teaching in Margaret River and surrounding schools.

The group intend to study gypsy jazz music as it makes them feel happy and carries them back in time to the heyday of swingin’ jazz.
